STARSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and artistic skating. Unique in Canada, this program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests (Assessments) through a nationally standardized testing system. Skaters who have mastered figure skating skills in STARSkate may also choose to pursue synchronized skating or pairs skating.
The STARSkate program consists of the STAR 1-5 (i.e., junior/intermediate) program and the STAR 6-Gold (intermediate/senior) program. Each program consists of figure skating skills in four areas: Skating Skills, Ice Dance, Free Skate and Artistic.
The STAR 1-5 program introduces skaters to the sport of figure skating and its disciplines: free skate, skills, and ice dance. The entry level of STAR 1 is designed to meet the exit level of Stage 6 in CanSkate; therefore it is imperative that all skaters beginning STAR 1 have the skills of Stages 5 and 6 in CanSkate. The goal of the program is to prepare skaters for successful completion of the STAR 1-5 assessments (tests) in free skate, skills and ice dance. This includes:
Skaters in this program will be assessed by the coach that is teaching them each discipline (free skate, skills and ice dance). All assessments in the STAR 1-5 program will be assessed to a standard and there is a Skate Canada Assessment Fee of $12 to attempt each assessment. Coaches will inform skaters and their parents or guardians when the skater is ready for an assessment.
The STAR 6-Gold program is a continuation of STAR 1-5 and the next set of skills for skaters to achieve after STAR 5.
STARSkate sessions at our club are designated as either Junior (STAR 1-3), Intermediate/Senior (STAR 4-Gold) or Open (STAR 1-Gold) and provide for individual practice and/or private/semi-private lessons with a coach of your choice. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada tests/assessments through a nationally standardized testing system. Please note: coaching in the form of private lessons is an additional cost to the registration price.
